There is never a dull day in the world of video codecs.
Recently, IdeaNova CTO Janne Pelkonen joined a host of industry experts in an hour-long Faultline webinar to discuss the future of video codecs. The panel took a look at some of the latest compression techniques: Versatile Video Coding (VVC), Essential Video Coding (EVC), Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding (LCEVC), and AV1. And they considered where the codecs might fit in various media ecosystems.
Today, there are more competing codecs than at any time before. Consumers are watching more content, across more devices, from multiple countries, and in various languages. As a result, video codecs continue to evolve to address these needs. The demands in video quality, resolution, fidelity, and frame rate are unprecedented.
And there are also so many different viewpoints! Janne, Fabio Murra (V-Nova), Jan de Cock (Synamedia), Carl Furgusson (MediaKind), and moderator, Tommy Flanagan, engaged in a lively discussion throughout the session.
